IMPROVISATION WITHOUT ACCOMPANIMENT by Matt Morton Matt Morton’s debut collection, Improvisation Without Accompaniment (BOA Editions), is now available for preorder. Morton’s lyric poems follow the rhythms of life for a young man coming-of-age in a small Texas town as he struggles with ruptures within his nuclear family and the loss of his faith. Dean Young, poet and contributor to the Gettysburg Review, wrote “Matt Morton must not have gotten the memo that American poetry is in an extinction event. These are poems of immense intelligence and presence as nimble as flames conveying the nearly unbearable intimacy this life demands, threatens, and rewards us with.” Improvisation Without Accompaniment was selected as a winner of the 18th annual A. Poulin, Jr. Poetry Prize by Patricia Smith. Morton’s poem “The View from Here” appeared in the Summer 2018 issue. Matt Morton holds a BA from the University of Texas at Austin and an MFA from the Johns Hopkins University Writing Seminars. His poetry has appeared in AGNI, Harvard Review, Tin House Online, and others. He has received support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, and the Sewanee Writers’ Conference. He serves as an associate editor for 32 Poems and is a Robert B. Toulouse Doctoral Fellow in English at the University of North Texas.
